I guess I'm set for something else...

When a door closes, a window opens... and I'm sure its all according to the Big Guy's Plan...
What the hey... I'm young, I've been accepted to NUS for M.Urban Design, we're working on a few good projects...
what more could I ask for... I still have a lot of miles left on my wheels and I hope to gain more experience
and do more work/pass the boards... so I guess this is God's little way of narrowing down the dizzying choices.

Although... I really would have enjoyed the chance to live/learn/work there... but the story doesn't end with this one yet:

March 23, 2007

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for applying to the Master of Architecture program at the
University of California, Berkeley.

I am writing to inform you that you have not been accepted for graduate
study in the Department of Architecture.

The material submitted with your application has been reviewed by the
admissions committee of our department. They have informed me that
they
are unable to recommend you for admission to the program.

Our department has the difficult task of selecting students with the
strongest overall records, from a large pool of well-qualified
applicants. Due to the strict enrollment ceiling of the Berkeley
campus,
each department may only admit a limited number of new students every
year. Unfortunately, this may result in not being able to accept many
applicants who are capable of excellent academic work.

I am sorry that my letter does not bring you good news and hope that
you
will be offered other opportunities to achieve your academic goals. My
apologies also that we were unable to send you a personalized message,
unfortunately our current email system does
not allow us to do so.

Sincerely,

Renee Chow, Associate Professor
Chair of Graduate Advisors
Eva Li Chair in Design Ethics

  1. hey thats sad. but well, you said it yourself...maybe your'e set for something else, perhaps even better. NUS is not that bad at all, you know. so goodluck to your other applications and/or future endeavors.

  2. Haha... that is so... designer... anyway... Thanks Jed! hope you don't get one of these rejection letters when its your turn naman to go hunting for opportunities...

  3. Sorry to hear that... I hate rejection in all possible ways :s Especially when you really really really want it... I haven't really put myself out there in looking for a job and I only applied in this one company that I really wanted to get into... and I was rejected twice :s (well, not twice YET but I heard that my contender was a UP summa cum laude graduate... So much for hoping :P)

I'm not much of an optimist (in giving advice?), but I really do think that instances like these could be blessings in disguise... you'll never know, right? :) And you have SO MUCH going on for you right now... a lot of people wishes they could be you!

  4. I've heard this line from one of our heads in SFC... If you want to make God smile/grin: make a plan... because He always has something better/bigger/better fit for you.

There's no despair... I know He has a sheepish grin on right now... and I'm excited to find out what its all about... and I'm sure the same goes for everyone.

  5. Hey, sorry about this setback. Was your heart really set on Berkley? NUS is a pretty good school, too. I was thinking of applying there a few months ago (MSc Building Science), but then I applied to University of Sydney and University College London instead (I wanted colder weather. haha). I had to defer my enrollment to next year, though, due to some work opportunities here.

If you're pushing through with grad studies at NUS, good luck, and have fun. :)

If you plan on searching for other opportunities, good luck on that, too. Try Europe, they offer many scholarship grants for architecture students. Don't be in too much of a hurry to take up graduate studies. I'm sure God is planning to open up more windows for you in the future. Best of luck!

  6. Hey thanks Lesley! Yeah... I also got admission packages for UCL and USyd... I was also about to send other applications to HKU and to Milan, but I was holding them because I was really waiting on the Cal news... but anyway... I think I'm pushing through with NUS... HKU isn't as noted, while Milan and other European schools sound really intriguing... I'm conserving my luck... mahirap tumira ng tumira pag kaunti lang ang bala... hehehe...

Congrats on the UCL and USyd applications (were you admitted on scholarship?) USyd has a strong reputation as a good design school... 2 of my old bosses in Manosa studied there... si Gelo Manosa and Stan Fernandez... and I've also had the chance to visit their school and meet some students... they are on the cutting edge in Arki... at least in that southern half of the world.

Good Luck! God Bless! and Thanks!

  7. Greetings from Cebu! I was in the ayala dreambuilders awarding ceremony to accompany the 2nd and 3rd place winners from my school, USC. If you finish your graduate studies in NUS, consider teaching part time in USC =) We just opened a graduate program in architecture. Since very few can go abroad to study we get teachers who studied abroad. Anyway... NUS is a good school... good luck!

  10. Aha! We've something in common... am also looking, but not as well diverse as your choices! How many have you applied? Am wondering if you have a copy or list of the top global uni (in architectecture of course), where's the best schools outside US?

Goodluck! ..and ye, maybe God has a better future for you than you've plan... "His ways are higher than man's ways." ;)

  15. Hi Erica, check www.archinect.com... they have a lot of grad school ranking debates there... their forums are a helpful resource for grad school applications... pero most of it is for the US nga lang... For outside the US: USyd, NUS, Politecnico Milano, Dessau (where Steph Tan is) and the AA in London are good choices...

  16. Thanks Carla! Yup... I know... Excited na nga ako for Singapore... have to pass the boards first...

  17. Well... hehehe... to be down-to-earth about it... this decision letter is proof that obviously, there are a lot of more experienced and more talented designers out there.

  18. Awww. Congrats on NUS though! :)

  19. Now I get why you noticed the building in Berkeley... Sorry to hear about that... but congratulations on NUS! I'm a firm believer that certain things happen for a reason. :)

  20. Yeah... I visited the campus back in 99 and 2004, I've been planning/working on it for quite a while na din. Pero I'm good... hoping things turn out well! Excited na din ako. Have a great summer... will you be working on you apprenticeship?

  21. Ey, sorry to hear about the results to your application to Berkeley, but sometimes bad news isnt always so bad, maybe youre just being directed to another path. You are very talented, devoted, and hard working, people like that have VERY LONG GOOD FUTURE ahead of them. Just as you said, you got accepted to NUS! Maybe thats an option isnt it? Its a great school, and i hear its difficult to get into the MaUD program there, so good job!
Chin up, and keep at it, you dont have to look far to see where all your achievements have taken you, and where you are now, they all came one after the other, haha. One set back is nothing compared to all these achievements.

  22. Thanks Monica! ;) Yeah I'm good. Excited na din ako. But I gotta get myself into review mode muna.
