Proposed Residence Extension

Yeah I know, that's one helluva firewall on the left side. But, That's the brief/requirement/program from the owner/s. Currently doing the working drawings. Hope to get done with them soon.

Conceptually, it's like adding a loft-wing to an existing bungalow house. This new loft-wing will be the expanded masters bedroom, with a high-ceilinged (is there a word) family flex space facing a pocket garden.

The masters bedroom is designed to be a flexible indoor-outdoor space, with the sliding doors opening out to a balcony.

Lemme know whatcha think.

More than the design, the tricky part is getting it built, especially with all the existing roof eaves/gutters that we'll have to cut, along with the demolition and reconstruction over the existing laundry/utility spaces.

  1. Reminds me of your Ayala Competition entry. Nice! But I'm quite troubled with the roof design of the "expanded" level. Kapag- bumagyo bubuhatin 'yan ng hangin. Siguro let's try to make it more slanted.

  3. Its supposed to be oriented towards the morning sun and facing an open lot with a view of the church/clubhouse a couple of blocks away. I'm thinking of making the horizontal panels fixed at an angle with extensions so that air would flow through while keeping the rain out. Only problem with this design is... its open to flies, and you won't be able to air-con the space.

  4. Conceptually, roofs are like aerofoils that cover a space from rain. Aerofoils can work both ways, they can produce lift (ala airplane wings) or can produce downforce (just like the foils of f1 cars) all roofs are subject to both forces depending on which angle wind hits them. But thats the beauty of having an engineer, they compute for both and at max wind and live/maintenance loads regardless of a roof's/aerofoil's pitch/angle-of-attack.

Yeah. the competition entry is like a sore that needs to be scratched. I'll probably lay off the look I came up for that project as soon as I get something built that incorporates those ideas. Until then, similarities will creep up.

  5. an architect's dream is an engineer's worst nightmare!

  6. Definitely an off-shoot of your Ayala entry.

i love the roof! it looks so thin, i like the exposed rafters and the struts.

maybe you could also apply these details to the original house for coherence.

  9. yep, that observation seem valid, how about the firewall?

maybe you could do like an irregularly angled firewall. something that will compliment the angular profile of the struts of the extension.
