5 questions from Mac www.nakanamamboogie.blogspot.com

1.) Which currently existing building best personifies the things you believe in as an architect? explain.
Wow… tough question…  It has to be Rural Studio’s work (under Samuel Mockbee)… more particularly the Mason’s Bend Community Center… it touches the land lightly… it does not disrupt (in a way… it’s  designed with soft, urbanist tendencies) but instead brings everyone together, its sustainable… from the rammed earth construction… to the really cool recycled glass windshields cum breathing curtain wall… It shows that architecture doesn’t have to be grand to be effective… also… I like Rural Studio’s work because of how they take a more populist, almost socialist stand on the role of architecture in society. I hate what’s happened to architecture here in the Philippines, its become so commercialized… effectively turning architects into the housepets of the rich… while totally missing out on our mission… on our “Hypocratic Oath” of providing shelter for people…  www.ruralstudio.com

2.) Which period in history (apart from contemporary times) is your favorite? explain.
Definitely the renaissance/age of enlightenment… there would have been more opportunities for discovery, exploration… etc. It must have been great to be part of the frenzy… runner-up would have to be during the Local Revolutionary Period… hahaha… I can imagine the “unleash the fury” moments…  when it comes to kicking colonial butts.

3.) Which song best speaks about your current predicament in life? explain.
Hmmm… 2 songs please… John Mayer’s “Bigger than my Body” : Yes I’m grounded, got my wings, clipped, I’m surrounded by all this pavement, guess I’ll circle, while I’m waiting for my fuse to dry… Someday I’ll fly… someday I’ll soar… because I’m bigger than my body gives me credit for.

And U2’s “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” Bono’s tribute to his dad: You are the reason why the opera is in me.

4.) Which sitcom character best personifies you? explain.
Ray Romano… dripping sarcasm… dry sense of humor… with the “galeng sa  ilong” tone of voice… maybe a little bit of Ross din… with the nerdy, forever jaded/emotionally scarred personality…

5.) Who is your favorite visual artist? why?

Sol Lewitt, his work resembles simple lines and doodles… but its in the beauty of how he combines all of these basic things that turns it into art… I saw his exhibition in SFMoMA… and although it doesn’t move you as emotionally as the more “emotive” and expressionist artists… his explorations on patterns makes you realize that there are so many patterns and sequences that we see visually, and that we can discover and appreciate for ourselves… his work moves me intellectually… makes me think… his work is really hearty “brain food” www.sfmoma.org/exhibitions/exhib_detail/00_exhib_sol_lewitt_bio.html
