EDSA Reflections

Last week, the PCIJ (Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism) held a mini-exhibit in Glorietta. They showed photos and profiles of the people who played major roles in the EDSA revolution 20 years ago. The personalities included the usual suspects... FVR, Enrile, Honasan, Cory... and also included a few behind-the-scenes operators.

Maybe, to spice things up and to serve as a social barometer, they added up message boards for people to write their thoughts and comments on the anniversary of the revolution. Reading through the comments brought mixed emotions for me; majority of the comments were very indifferent and callous. A lot of the comments (I'm guessing, from the younger generation) were pilosopo and nang-iinis... mga hirit na: "EDSA? Traffic dun!" or "Wala namang kwenta yang EDSA eh!"

There were a few positive comments, but I was really disappointed with what I read... I decided to contribute something to the boards... I wrote something to the tune of something like this:

   "The mere fact we're here and able to discuss things openly and whimsically is testament to our victory in EDSA, let us not forget this fact, and take it for granted. The battle for democratic freedom is one thing, while the battle for economic and social freedom is another, and is something that does not take a week to win."

So siyempre, I was feeling good about myself for writing something with sense on an otherwise half-full, yet terribly empty board... Of course, dahil mahaba yung sinulat ko, napuno na siya... I turned back and saw a couple of people nodding in agreement, tapos a woman came over (I'm assuming na siya yung nagbabantay sa exhibits) and took down the board I wrote on and put it on the floor, she got a new board, and posted it on the panel... She grinned... puno na eh...

Wow pare... ganun ang democracy... you write something with sense... tapos you get taken down to make way for others .

I was there during the first revolution... I was sitting on top of my dad's shoulders with a yellow ninoy t-shirt on, and a yellow bandana around my 3-yr.old skull. Of course I couldn't remember much about it, but I was there, along with a whole sea of people and kids from my generation.

I was also there during the second revolution... this time, tightly holding on to my 2 sisters while we awaited news about Erap's ouster.

Its frustrating because these past events and attempted power grabs and destabilization attempts were all enacted by the same people who were in EDSA1 and EDSA2, the same people... from Cory, FVR, Enrile, Honasan, Imelda and Imee, JV, Jinggoy and Erap, heck even the nuns and priests, the soldiers... all the same!

Why can't they just leave it at that? Maybe because they are afraid that their reputations and legacies have been tarnished, and that everything has been for naught. The truth is, history will be the judge of that.

As for the battle for social and economic freedom, sad to say, they are not equipped for that... because they are now part of the status quo.

Its been said that the best comedians and speakers had one thing in common... they knew when to end it. Thats a lesson that these veterans have to learn.

As for me, I'll end it narin... tama na... you guys did your part, leave the next battle to us, take it from me, you'll all do history and yourselves a favor.

Yep... Archi nga...

Yesterday, I just got word that the project that I've been planning,
scheming and revising the past 4 months was just cancelled because the
property that we were to develop was bought out in a flash deal by a
rival developer. Wow, just like that, my project was erased... badtrip
pare... pano ba naman masyado inupuan ng company yung decision making
process... if we could have closed the deal faster and just figure out
what to do with the lot later... then maybe it would have still been a
go... but then... can't place the blame on my company din, the rival
developer was probably working on a deal for quite a while narin, and
I'm sure the seller/brokers grabbed the chance at a fat cash
downpayment.

I guess... this is just another in a long list of still-born projects
that I'll be running into, I guess I just have to learn from these
projects, and soldier on... because sooner or later... I'll hit it. And
when I do... I want to be ready.

Glacially slow... Conversations with myself

Sometimes I feel like the rhythm of my profession is just too slow for me... I've gotten a headstart on it, and its not like I'm like everyone else who just graduated college... Its been 11 years of production work and taking all the shit it can dole out, I've had my share of small victories... and yet I'm still in the making pare...

Sometimes I feel like I'm at the edge of the runway priming for take-off... with no clearance...

Pare... bakit? Hindi naman basketball pinasukan mo ah, mabuti sana if arki involves a ball and a ring...

Basta...

Status quo lang...

All I can say is...  things will change!

In the mean time... roll with the punches... take the crap... swallow your pride... because everyone else reports to work and does that everyday.

Tangents

A fleeting moment,
which repeats herself
de ja vu?
yet with each iteration
different from the last

Ending similarly
with the gut-wrenching
guilt and loneliness
ripped apart by
indecision,
circumstance
and by distance

Parallel lines
aren't supposed to meet?
If so then what are we?
What am I talking about?
There is no we;

She's the emphatic and
giving spiral
that tangents
and propels my lifeline;
For each time our paths cross,
I am propelled to new heights...

Ode to the Afghan Hound

An imperious manner

with unstated elegance,

comfortable wherever

along the streets,

or the mansion drawing rooms

her haughty poise,

denying her current conditions

while affirming

where she truly belongs;

Orphaned by circumstance

and human mistakes;

Adopted by the world,

raised by her own rationale;

betraying what others would

declare as the feeling nature

of the fairer sex;

Frail she may seem,

for work and hunger

have taken their toll;

bent by the weight,

of the burden of changing her world,

yet could never ever be broken;

The chords and strains of her life

transform the streets around her,

and the surrounding hoi-polloi,

into what could be mistaken

as a hotel lobby, bringing culture

and fiery passion in an otherwise

decrepit black hole;

Oh! What joy it is for me to see

potential for greatness

where others do not;

Strike out and make your mark

do yourself proud

and reinstate things

to what they should have been

after the fall;

Nothing can and will get

in her way, for she could no longer be hurt;

no longer be scathed

She stands at the end of a

negative spiral;

and the beginning of a new one

that will shoot for still unseen heights;

I could not dampen my enthusiasm

for I will stand witness to her struggle

more so to her victory. And be a testimony

to how she fought and reshaped

her world and the people around her.

Random Thoughts

1. I think that a lot of the new projects in the Makati CBD are starting to all look the same... all of them have Mohawk tops... go figure... check out Oakwood... then Residences at Greenbelt, then The Columns Legazpi/The Columns Buendia... hello?! have we run out of bright ideas on how to treat the crowns of our buildings?

2. Visit Glorietta... then take the MRT and get off at Cubao... drag your ass to Gateway Mall... see anything similar? Right! Its the lasercut motifs... again... chances are... the guys from RTKL came over, stayed in Makati, moved around Glorietta and then subconsciously picked up those motifs and slapped them onto Gateway.

3. When a 23-year-old designer suggests an idea but gets shot down because of biases/taste, but then in comes a design consultant... with a foreign education and a hell of a reputation... suggesting exactly the same idea... and gets away with it... what do you call that?!

4. You don't run things around here kid... yeah... I know... thats exactly why its easier for me to lay my ass on the line and make these suggestions...

5. Foresight pare... foresight... kaya wala tayong nararating... kasi we don't know how to look and plan ahead.

6. Read this somewhere... its true: "Life is a tragedy to those who feel, and a comedy/farce to those who think."

7. Lastly... I might not, but I will, and when I do, you'll see.

MBTI Psychometric Test Results= INTJ (Introverted, iNtuitive, Thinking, Judging), wala ako masabi... very accurate

Introverted iNtuitive Thinking Judging
by Marina Margaret Heiss

Profile: INTJ
Revision: 3.0
Date of Revision: 27 Feb 2005

To outsiders, INTJs may appear to project an aura of "definiteness", of self-confidence. This self-confidence, sometimes mistaken for simple arrogance by the less decisive, is actually of a very specific rather than a general nature; its source lies in the specialized knowledge systems that most INTJs start building at an early age. When it comes to their own areas of expertise -- and INTJs can have several -- they will be able to tell you almost immediately whether or not they can help you, and if so, how. INTJs know what they know, and perhaps still more importantly, they know what they don't know.

INTJs are perfectionists, with a seemingly endless capacity for improving upon anything that takes their interest. What prevents them from becoming chronically bogged down in this pursuit of perfection is the pragmatism so characteristic of the type: INTJs apply (often ruthlessly) the criterion "Does it work?" to everything from their own research efforts to the prevailing social norms. This in turn produces an unusual independence of mind, freeing the INTJ from the constraints of authority, convention, or sentiment for its own sake.

INTJs are known as the "Systems Builders" of the types, perhaps in part because they possess the unusual trait combination of imagination and reliability. Whatever system an INTJ happens to be working on is for them the equivalent of a moral cause to an INFJ; both perfectionism and disregard for authority may come into play, as INTJs can be unsparing of both themselves and the others on the project. Anyone considered to be "slacking," including superiors, will lose their respect -- and will generally be made aware of this; INTJs have also been known to take it upon themselves to implement critical decisions without consulting their supervisors or co-workers. On the other hand, they do tend to be scrupulous and even-handed about recognizing the individual contributions that have gone into a project, and have a gift for seizing opportunities which others might not even notice.

In the broadest terms, what INTJs "do" tends to be what they "know". Typical INTJ career choices are in the sciences and engineering, but they can be found wherever a combination of intellect and incisiveness are required (e.g., law, some areas of academia). INTJs can rise to management positions when they are willing to invest time in marketing their abilities as well as enhancing them, and (whether for the sake of ambition or the desire for privacy) many also find it useful to learn to simulate some degree of surface conformism in order to mask their inherent unconventionality.

Personal relationships, particularly romantic ones, can be the INTJ's Achilles heel. (Gee... I couldn't agree more pare!) While they are capable of caring deeply for others (usually a select few), and are willing to spend a great deal of time and effort on a relationship, This happens in part because many INTJs do not readily grasp the social rituals; for instance, they tend to have little patience and less understanding of such things as small talk and flirtation (which most types consider half the fun of a relationship). To complicate matters, INTJs are usually extremely private people, and can often be naturally impassive as well, which makes them easy to misread and misunderstand. Perhaps the most fundamental problem, however, is that INTJs really want people to make sense. :-) This sometimes results in a peculiar naivete', paralleling that of many Feelers -- only instead of expecting inexhaustible affection and empathy from a romantic relationship, the INTJ will expect inexhaustible reasonability and directness.

Probably the strongest INTJ assets in the interpersonal area are their intuitive abilities and their willingness to "work at" a relationship. Although as Thinkers, they do not always have the kind of natural empathy that many Feelers do, the Intuitive function can often act as a good substitute by synthesizing the probable meanings behind such things as tone of voice, turn of phrase, and facial expression. This ability can then be honed and directed by consistent, repeated efforts to understand and support those they care about, and those relationships which ultimately do become established with an INTJ tend to be characterized by their robustness, stability, and good direct communications. (Sinabi mo pa! Ayoko manghula!)

Functional Analysis
by Joe Butt

Introverted iNtuition

INTJs are idea people. Anything is possible; everything is negotiable. Whatever the outer circumstances, INTJs are ever perceiving inner pattern-forms and using real-world materials to operationalize them. Others may see what is and wonder why; INTJs see what might be and say "Why not?!" Paradoxes, antinomies, and other contradictory phenomena aptly express these intuitors' amusement at those whom they feel may be taking a particular view of reality too seriously. INTJs enjoy developing unique solutions to complex problems.

Extraverted Thinking

Thinking in this auxiliary role is a workhorse. Closure is the payoff for efforts expended. Evaluation begs diagnosis; product drives process. As they come to light, Thinking tends, protects, affirms and directs iNtuition's offspring, fully equipping them for fulfilling and useful lives. A faithful pedagogue, Thinking argues not so much on its own behalf, but in defense of its charges. And through this process these impressionable ideas take on the likeness of their master.

Introverted Feeling

Feeling has a modest inner room, two doors down from the Most Imminent iNtuition. It doesn't get out much, but lends its influence on behalf of causes which are Good and Worthy and Humane. We may catch a glimpse of it in the unspoken attitude of good will, or the gracious smile or nod. Some question the existence of Feeling in this type (ano ako bato?), yet its unseen balance to Thinking is a cardinal dimension in the full measure of the INTJ's soul.

Extraverted Sensing

Sensing serves with a good will, or not at all. As other inferior functions, it has only a rudimentary awareness of context, amount or degree. Thus INTJs sweat the details or, at times, omit them. "I've made up my mind, don't confuse me with the facts" could well have been said by an INTJ on a mission. Sensing's extraverted attitude is evident in this type's bent to savor sensations rather than to merely categorize them. Indiscretions of indulgence are likely an expression of the unconscious vengeance of the inferior emotional/sensual aspects of the person.

Congratulations! and the push for Local Design

Congrats to the 4 Board Topnochers from UST! Sana tuloy-tuloy na yung
streak natin of number 1s. I really do hope that this signals a
renaissance for Architecture in UST, and in the Philippines in general.
Although most people would dismiss the board exam as an exercise in
pure memory work and bara-bara drafting skills, it still counts for
bragging rights among the school design studios, mas lalo sa
workforce... where its been said that people from UST are the
artists/designers, while people from UP are the researchers,
managers... despite the higher passing percentage for UP (mainly
because only a handful take the course there) UST is still considered a
design powerhouse, dishing out the likes of Lindy Locsin and Bobby
Manosa, along with the current crop of professionals.

I hope that foreign-trained/schooled grads and experienced alumni go
back and whip the studios back in shape and get us back on the cutting
edge, and finally reclaim Filipino Architecture and Design for
Filipinos by Filipinos... and not by some snotty, over-charging,
racist, red-neck foreign consultant.

Its about time we also acknowledge our mistakes too as designers...
particularly with this crop of current practitioners... the cheezy
post-modernism/classicism, the harsh brutalism, the commercialist
"jollibee"-wings and colors... and the big-box mall, along with the
suburbanization and high-end re-urbanization of our CBDs are all
brought about by our blind following of foreign trends and styles.

Let us learn to be humanist designers, solving problems, working with
our climate, CONTEXT, culture, technology, budget and people. Let us
learn to sift what we see in the mags and abroad. Its time we reclaim
the professionalism and design excellence spearheaded by the first
waves of Pinoy Modernists.

More than anything... let's prove this to the clients... to our
customers and to the general public. This is about enhancing their
comfort levels, whether or not they feel good about going into and
using your building, and whether or not its worth investing on you to
design it. We've let the clients down by shoving shitty adaptations
down their throats. Its been years of shit and suffering for the
industry as a whole, and everyone's complaining about it... but at the
end of the day, more than the quality of the service we render as
professionals, its about the quality, excellence and adaptability of
our finished product... our designs, that will enable local builders
and developers to trust us again.
